Bu gərginlik yeni olmasa da, son dövrlərdə qarşılıqlı ittihamlar və ictimai etirazlarla daha da dərinləşib. Paşinyana qarşı keçirilən etiraz aksiyaları və kilsənin bəyanatları bu ziddiyyətin siyasi xarakter daşıdığını göstərir. Paşinyan, Rusiyanın təsirində olan kilsə strukturundan qurtulmağa çalışır. O, kilsənin ictimai nüfuzunu zəiflətməyi və cəmiyyətlə əlaqəsini sarsıtmağı əsas çıxış yolu kimi görür”.Qeyd edək ki, Ermənistan Baş naziri Aparatı rəhbərinin müavini Taron Çaxoyan bildirib ki, Eçmiədzin kilsəsi II Qareginin övladının olub-olmaması ilə bağlı iddianı nə təsdiqləyib, nə də təkzib edib. Kilsə bu məsələlərin yalnız daxili qaydalarla həll olunduğunu vurğulayıb. Baş nazir Nikol Paşinyan isə bildirib ki, əgər II Qaregin subaylıq andını pozubsa, katolikos kimi fəaliyyət göstərə bilməz. Buna baxmayaraq, kilsə və katolikos bu açıqlamaya cavab verməyib.
Siyasi şərhçi bildirib ki, bu, həm Paşinyanın daxili hakimiyyətini möhkəmləndirmək, həm də Ermənistanın xarici siyasətini daha müstəqil aparmaq niyyəti ilə bağlıdır.
“Son günlərdə mediada ikinci katolikosun ailə həyatı qurduğu və övlad sahibi olduğu barədə iddialar yayılıb. Əgər bu məlumatlar təsdiqlənərsə, xristian ənənələrinə zidd olduğu üçün kilsənin nüfuzu ciddi şəkildə zədələnə bilər. Çünki yüksək rütbəli dini rəhbərlərin ailə həyatı qurması xristian adətləri ilə uyğun gəlmir. Paşinyan hökuməti bu vəziyyətdən istifadə edərək kilsənin cəmiyyətdəki mövqeyini zəiflətməyə çalışa bilər. Bu istiqamətdə atılan addımların nəticə verməsi, Paşinyan üçün daxili siyasi arenada mühüm üstünlük qazandıracaq. Beləliklə, o, kilsənin təsirindən azad olmuş daha dünyəvi bir siyasi idarəetmə mühiti yaratmaq məqsədinə bir addım da yaxınlaşmış olacaq”.
